In 36 years of fishing Michigan Upper
Peninsula lakes, river and streams, I haven’t come anywhere near to fishing them
all. It would take a few lifetimes I suspect.
But this much I can tell you… the Hiawatha
(West) National Forest offers some of the very best and most remote in Michigan. I’ve been
guiding fishermen UP here since 1992. Almost every single client I have had has
fallen in love with the area and has made the U.P. their fishing vacation
destination back here again and again. Once you encounter it… you’ll be hooked
too. I most certainly was.
Who am I?
I am 53 years young and originally from the
Detroit area. I moved here in 1991, though family relatives owned property UP
here since I was a young child. I’ve been fishing here ever since. These days I
work as a publisher and web design consultant. I publish inland lake contour
maps and serve as a fisheries consultant for private lake ownership. I have a
very thorough understanding of our fisheries and watershed.
My love and compassion for the Upper
Peninsula compels me to share our resource-rich paradise with those willing to
discover their own back-yard wilderness paradise.
Considerations
There are a number of vacation itineraries
you should plan for and consider.
Lodging … do you prefer a lavish, hidden away
cottage in the woods? How about a primitive cabin with just the basics?
Or a Motel perhaps? Or camping- either developed
campgrounds, private or remote. How many days do you intend to stay?
Targeted Species… largemouth bass, smallmouth
bass, brook brown trout stream fishing (my favorite) or walleye, northern pike
and/or muskie. We also
have a few nice, and remotely hidden pan fish lakes- not even the locals know
about them.
Transportation… if you’re going to approach
any of our hidden, back county trout streams or inland lakes you’ll need a four
wheel drive vehicle- or at least someone to get you in and back out. Oh yeah,
lets not forget about maps. You’ll need location maps to lakes, rivers and
streams if you plan to make the trek by yourselves.
Back-roads can be a
nightmare and getting lost will only absorb valuable vacation time. Believe me…
to this day I still can get disorientated. Fishing lake maps are an essential
and time-saving benefit too!
Gear… you have to be prepared for the worse.
Due to our geographical surroundings (Great Lakes) weather patterns can change
quickly. Fishing from shore? Wading a stream or river will require waders or
hip boots, depending on the water levels and where you intend to fish.
Vessel… Need a boat or canoe? If you have
one- better make sure it’s not too large for any inland lakes you may be
considering to fish. Most inland lakes will take on a maximum size vessel to 16
feet. Only a dozen or so will accept any larger.
Trust me, all this is not intended to
discourage you. To really enjoy the great recreational resources we have here,
it’s best to make sure your vacation itinerary is well planned and organized, in
order to really appreciate everything the area has to offer.
I can set up your entire fishing vacation
package, complete with lodging. If you prefer a rustic setting, (tent camping
or rustic cabin) I can also add meals.
If you think I can be of service in helping
you make your Upper Peninsula fishing trip a successful and enjoyable experience, just let me know and
I’ll be delighted to help you put together a fishing vacation package that
you’ll not soon forget, and compel you to want to return again and again.
