How bad are the bugs in the Upper Peninsula?

How bad are the bugs in Michigan's Yoop?Michigan Upper Peninsula is known quite well for its spring and summer bugs, insects and pests- as well as its winter snowfall. How do the two compliment one another?

Here is what's up for the 2009 bug season

Updated: Sunday, April 05, 2009

Moisture is ideal spawning grounds for bugs and insects. More moisture... more bugs. If this past winter is any indication on how much moisture we may acquire by middle Spring- and the rain season, you can just about bet it'll be a moderate to high insect index for the 2009 tourist season. There's no shortage of moisture in our forests now.

It's too early to tell. However, if April showers become more consistent, that could easily add to our current moisture levels and thus increase our bug and insect index considerably.

Constant evaporation brought on by dry wind-swept days will assist in depleting acquired moisture levels and hopefully will keep pesky bugs at bay. So far, I'm unhappy to report, the U.P. bug outlook appears unfavorable at this time.

It's all about how much rainfall we receive and the process of evaporation throughout the weeks ahead. And we've got a ton of moisture on our hands.

So far and primarily due to a late, heavy accumulation of snowfall throughout February and March, I expect we'll experience a moderate to high bug index.  I think we'll see water water everywhere for some time... the perfect spawning grounds for pesky insects.

Keep close watch as we approach the Spring bug and insect season now stepping up to the starting line in the next several weeks.

Remember, it's still early in the season.  Make sure to visit again soon for further bug and insect updates.
