Each season takes on a new challenge and discoveries into new tactics, tackle & techniques.
I thoroughly love fishing the U.P.
I've guided trout fishermen who have fished all over the world- from Kamchatka,
Russia to New Zealand. What do they say about fishing Michigan's Upper
Peninsula? "I would have never known such a place existed in the state of
Michigan" That says it all.
My guiding days are over, but this website continues on- since its beginning,
way
back in 1996.
What's my mission now?

Question: of the week.
I'm trying to plan a trip to Lake Superior, Two-Hearted River area to do some shore fishing for Menominee. What dates should I be shooting for? I cannot believe how difficult it is to find this information. I've been on the phone with bait shops, charter companies, even Gander Mountain.
Apparently, this type of fishing is not well-known. Can you help me?
Thanks,
Jess
Answer:
Jess,
Sounds pretty typical. The Yoop business environment can be pretty lame- especially at this time of the year. They just don't want to be bothered unless there's a herd of demand... like Summer.
I can't tell you about ice out in and around the Paradise area at this time- but it's going to happen fast if not already. Menominee are pretty much fair game all season long, though ice out- I would have to say is the best time of the whole year.
If you can cast or get to deep water from shore or a fishing pier, you'll find Menominee. Catch them like you would any bottom feeding fish. Small worms, grubs and just about anything else you can put on a small hook. I've even hooked pieces of macaroni. Just dance it, ever so slightly off the bottom.
Daytime temps above freezing have arrived. It's the nights that are still cold. Once the over night temps reach and stay above freezing it's good to go- provided of course ice is out.
I'd have to say your best bet will be around the 15 of April. But keep a close watch daily on the weather. When you begin to see evening temps keeping up and above freezing, you should be good to go.
Give me a heads UP on well you make out... pics too would be awesome.
Good Luck and have loads of fun
Chris
