Each season takes on a new challenge and discoveries into new tactics, tackle & techniques.
I thoroughly love fishing the U.P.
I've guided trout fishermen who have fished all over the world- from Kamchatka,
Russia to New Zealand. What do they say about fishing Michigan's Upper
Peninsula? "I would have never known such a place existed in the state of
Michigan" That says it all.
My guiding days are over, but this website continues on- since its beginning,
way
back in 1996.
What's my mission now?
To help and assist anyone willing to brave the clear water fishing
experience. So, rather than sell any services, and as a way to give back and
contribute to the World Wide Web community, simply ask the Pro.
I'll utilize this medium to answer questions anglers are asking.
Question: of the week.
Dan writes,
Is there a way to tell when the best fishing is going to be when ice fishing
Answer:
Dan,
In all my 40 plus years ice fishing, I have never been able to conclude when
the best ice fishing occurs.
Except, early ice in and early ice out. I do know however, while in the
dead of winter, best ice fishing occurs near and around structure such as
weed beds, debris, sharp drop offs, submerged islands, undercut shoreline
banks and the edge of shallow reefs adjacent to deep water. Find these
types of structure and chances are good you'll score big.
Another ice fishing tip.. keep moving, create and fish as many holes as
possible. Fish are moving and so should you. Don't hang over one hole.
Fish a hole for a maximum 10 minutes and move on to the next. You can fish
a drop off's length or its gradual or sharp depths.
Structure is everything. If you create a good pattern ice fishing multiple
holes, oftentimes during a day's outing you can just about figure out, at
which durations fish are moving in and moving out. Take advantage of the
opportunity. In one hour you can easily fish and manage 6 holes ranging in
different depths or a length of a drop off. After four hours you should be
able to pick up a good indicator as to where and when fish are moving- provided of
course, they're biting.
Hope this helps you out. Let me know how you make out. Good Luck
Chris
